Microfiber cloth or cotton cloth. Which is better?

It's a familiar scene. You've just rinsed your car, the sun is breaking through, and you want to get it dry and streak-free as quickly as possible. You grab a stack of old cotton towels from the cupboard. They feel familiar, sturdy, and absorbent. But as soon as you go over the paint, you see it happening: vague streaks are left behind, lint floats down, and when the sun shines directly on it, you see small circular scratches that weren't there before. It's frustrating and at the same time a wake-up call: maybe cotton isn't the right tool. That's exactly when many people switch to microfiber cloths.

Why cotton falls short on car paint

Cotton is soft on the skin, but not on car paint. The fibers are relatively thick and irregular, meaning dirt and sand are not held but pushed forward. The result: fine scratches that become visible as a haze under bright light. Moreover, cotton often leaves lint behind. This may not be noticeable when drying hands, but on glass or high-gloss paint, every speck of lint is disturbingly visible. A cotton cloth can absorb moisture but quickly loses its capacity and soon feels heavy and cumbersome to use.

The difference microfiber makes

A microfiber cloth has a completely different structure. The fibers are ultra-thin and densely woven, which makes them attract and hold water and dirt. Instead of causing scratches, the fiber traps dirt. This makes microfiber safe for paint, glass, and interiors. A cloth like the RUSH Microfiber Cloth also has a closed structure, which means it doesn't shed lint and consistently delivers streak-free results. You'll notice the difference immediately: you need to apply less pressure, absorption is greater, and the end result is much cleaner.

Experience on windows

Anyone who has ever tried to clean glass with cotton knows it's a struggle. Streaks and lint seem inevitable. Microfiber tackles this differently. One smooth wipe from corner to corner is often enough to make glass completely clear. No second cloth needed, no extra rounds to wipe away lint. It gives confidence to know that a cloth does exactly what you ask, without you having to compensate.

Interior: control instead of greasiness

Microfiber is also superior for car interiors. On displays, buttons, and dashboards, cotton often leaves moist streaks. Microfiber, on the other hand, picks up grease and dust in one go, without residue. Spray the product onto the cloth and gently wipe the surface. You immediately see that it remains clean and fresh. Especially on high-gloss panels and touchscreens, this makes a big difference: clear, without stains or smudges.

Maintenance: why microfiber lasts longer

Another important difference lies in durability. A cotton cloth often deteriorates quickly once you wash it several times. The structure deforms and absorption decreases. Microfiber, however, remains effective, provided you wash it correctly. Do not use fabric softener, as it clogs the fibers, and choose a product specifically designed for microfiber. In the blog how to wash microfiber cloths, you'll find exactly how to do this. This way, the fibers remain soft, absorbent, and effective, even after dozens of washes.

Why more and more enthusiasts are switching

It's no coincidence that almost all detailers and car enthusiasts swear by microfiber. It provides more control, more confidence, and a much better end result. Where cotton causes frustration and repetition, microfiber delivers peace of mind and certainty. And perhaps more importantly: it saves time. You have to go over the same surface less often, meaning you finish faster and still get a cleaner result.
