How to safely clean your car with a pressure washer

After a weekend trip through rain, mud, and country roads, you get out and immediately see it: your car, normally gleaming and pristine, now looks more like an off-road vehicle after an off-road rally. Splashed dirt everywhere, stubborn mud in the wheel wells, and a dull haze over the paint. Time to take action.

You grab the pressure washer, ready to make short work of the grime. But one wrong move can be disastrous for your paintwork. Don't panic: with the right approach, you'll have your car shining again in no time, without scratches or damage. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it properly.

Step 1: Choose the right pressure and spray pattern

The biggest mistake people make? Thinking that harder is better.
Especially with a pressure washer, too much force can be fatal. Set your device to a pressure between 100 and 130 bar. This gives you enough power to rinse away dirt, but prevents damage to the paint, trim, or mirrors.

Always use a wide spray nozzle and maintain sufficient distance (about 30 to 50 centimeters). Never aim directly at seams, rubber seals, or vulnerable parts. Remember: you want to remove the dirt, not the paint.

Step 2: Pre-rinsing is essential

Before you even think about foam or soap, start with pre-rinsing.
By first thoroughly rinsing your car with water, you remove loose sand and dirt. This prevents you from rubbing small stones or grains of sand over the paint later during washing, which is exactly what causes nasty scratches.

Work systematically: always from top to bottom. This prevents dirt from the bottom from getting onto clean areas again.

Step 3: Time for foam

Now that your car is wet and free of loose dirt, it's time for the foam layer.
Use a foam cannon like the Rush Foam Cannon Pro to apply a thick layer of Snow Foam. This foam loosens stubborn dirt from the paint, without you having to physically scrub.

Let the foam sit for five to ten minutes. You'll see the dirt slowly slide down, even before you've touched a single sponge.

Step 4: Don't forget the rims

Rims are perhaps the dirtiest part of your car.
Brake dust, road salt, oil – it all collects between the spokes and in the wheel wells. Here you need more than just foam. Use a special wheel cleaner like Iron Remover. This product turns purple as it dissolves brake dust and metallic particles.

For a truly thorough cleaning, use the Rush Wheel Woolie Set.
With these soft brushes, you can easily get between the spokes and deep into the wheel wells, without the risk of scratches. Use short movements and let the tool do the work.

Step 5: Thorough rinsing

Once the foam and cleaning agents have done their job, it's time to rinse everything off.
Again, use a wide spray pattern and work from top to bottom. Rinse until no foam residue is visible. Be extra careful with seams, mirrors, and rims. Dirt tends to cling there.

Step 6: Drying without streaks

If you let your car air dry in the sun, you'll inevitably get water spots and limescale stains. So don't!
Use a high-quality microfiber towel like the Rush Drying Towel. This towel quickly absorbs water without leaving scratches.

Again, work from top to bottom and wipe with long, straight motions. Pay extra attention to water that lingers around the mirrors, door jambs, and wheel wells.

Step 7: Apply protection for long-lasting shine

Now that your car is clean and dry, you'll naturally want to protect it from new dirt.
A quick way to do that is with a spray coating like Nano Wet Coat. Spray it onto the wet paint and wipe it off with a cloth. The coating ensures that dirt, water, and dust adhere less easily.

Do you want that little bit extra shine and protection? Then you can also opt for a traditional wax. This takes a little more time, but gives your car that truly deep shine that you won't be able to stop looking at.
